CHAPTER 10

Mac wanted to go home. He’d checked on the kittens, and they had everything they needed. Now he wanted someone to take care of him. He wanted his own dinner in his own bowl. And later he wanted to curl up on top of Jamie’s head, and fall asleep to the sound of David—and Diogee—snoring.

But Jamie wasn’t really his Jamie anymore. She didn’t even smell like herself. What had happened to her? How could his person have locked him away? If Jamie wasn’t Jamie, then home wasn’t home. There was no reason to go back.

He didn’t have time to spare anyway. It was time to do another investigation of a possible person for one of his kittens. He could smell a male human nearby. He liked the odor. It soothed him. It might be good for Zoomies to have a calm person. He couldn’t race around all the time. Every once in a while, he would need a place to nap, and a human could make a comfortable nap spot.

Mac trotted across the street and slipped through the fence. There was a lot of rushing water by the house. Mac didn’t like the sound. It reminded him of the time Jamie had given him a bath. She kept blah-blahing about fleas. But there was plenty of dry ground in the yard. It was easy to reach the human sitting outside without getting his paws wet. The human’s eyes were closed, and he had his face lifted up to the sun. Mac approved. Dozing in the sun was one of his favorite activities.

He decided to take a snooze. When the human got up, Mac would follow him. Maybe he liked sardinesies, too. He found the perfect patch of sunshine, turned around three times, then decided he needed two more turns. Ahh. Now he could nap. He lay down in the warm grass and closed his eyes.

Mac’s sunny spot had become partially shady when the sound of the gate opening and closing woke him up. A human female was heading his way. Mac stood, and the human male stood, too. “Shelby! I wasn’t expecting you,” the man blah-blahed.

Mac’s nose twitched. The female’s scent had a sharp tang that irritated him. Not sadness or anger. It was kind of like she’d been rolling in flowers and kind of like she’d been spraying herself with the stuff Jamie sprayed in the trash can to cover up all the good smellsies.

“You know I like to be unpredictable.” The woman kissed the man, then handed him a bag of what Mac knew was fried chicken. It wasn’t sardinesies or tuna, but his tummy was saying “get me that.” He knew he’d have to wait for one of the humans to take the food out of the bag. Humans sometimes liked to give, but they did the loud blah-blahs if you decided to take what you wanted. Mac wouldn’t mind grabbing and running. It didn’t matter to him what humans liked or didn’t like. But he needed more observation time.
