"I see you've already charmed your way onto the force," I tell him. "Any news yet? You doing, okay?"

"Well, I do have a certain charisma," he jokes. "I had a temporary bug in the room. Now that I'm on the inside, I have one that records audio and visual. They haven't let me into their inner circle yet. That Sam guy Therese mentioned is still working. Apparently, he's the mayor's son."

"They clean?" I ask.

"Sam for sure is. I think I can trust him. Haven't filled him in yet. As far as the mayor... he's not in on any of the trafficking, but he may be in on some of the other stuff. Still need to find out more. I'm waiting for more on him before I talk to Sam. Don't want to be the one to tell him if his dad turns up crooked. Ya know?"

"Yeah, that might make the whole thing blow up." A call comes over the radio for "Deputy Daniels."

"Well, that's me. I'll see you in a couple weeks," O'Neal tells me.

"If you need me, holler." I slap the top of the car, and walk back to Lyric.

"Everything going okay?" she asks.

"So far, so good." I cup her cheek, looking into her eyes. "You get one of your feelings or anything, you tell me. Okay?" She nods. The look on my face telling her just how serious this is. O'Neal may be used to going undercover, working without back up. I'm not. Anything is going down; my brothers have my back. It's not fear. We work as a solid unit, each working our own angles. A lot like the military, it's a team, and we function as one. With O'Neal on the inside, taking the lead, and not able to really get the feel like he has, I'm going into this blind.

A copperhead slithers across the dirt between me and Lyric. She gasps. Instinctively, I pull out my knife and throw it. It lands right into the snake's head, killing it. My boot covers it, and I pull out the knife, wiping it off on my leg. At least, it isn't a gator. Now scanning the area, I get on my bike. Other than a bullet, I have no clue how to take down one of those suckers. I've only seen them on tv, and their remnants in the random stores as we've gotten more south. The thought of seeing one of those is giving me the creeps.

We almost reach Luna Sound. The town is named after the waterway. There's a small river that meets the Gulf of Mexico. It's east of the Mississippi River, before you get to the state line. I ride the bike onto a ferry that will take us to the island they live on. It's not far. The closer we get, the more lit up it is. The zydeco music getting louder and louder. It's upbeat. The kind you can't help but have a good time around. We putt slowly off of the ferry, parking where the rest of the party-goer's vehicles are.
