Moving on to the nearby city of Stockton, California, the detectives interviewed James Luu, who was a son of Son Ho, one of Shaw’s aunts. James recalled that Shaw did visit them, about four years previously, which might have been around May or June 1994. At the time Shaw told James that he’d worked in security, and James related, “Shaw did not act like a normal person. He would drink a lot, and drink until he got drunk. He seemed depressed. When he saw a nice woman on television, he would say things like, ‘She has a nice ass,’ or ‘She has nice tits.’”
The detectives next spoke with Shaw’s aunt, Son Ho. She remembered Shaw driving a large American car when he stopped by, possibly in 1994, and he said he was going from southern California back to Portland. A large American car is exactly what had been stolen from the Campbells’ home in San Ramon. Son Ho added that Shaw liked Anna Ho a lot, and called her “Mom.” Son did not get along with Anna, and did not see her very often, nor had she seen Shaw very much over the years. Son Ho remembered Shaw talking to her children, and telling them to stay in school. She didn’t think he was crazy or heard voices, and that he didn’t seem to take drugs, although he drank alcohol to excess.
The detectives had more luck with Kim Luu Ho, one of Shaw’s cousins, and she recalled that Shaw had come to Stockton in 1994 and might have stayed three or four days. She didn’t feel comfortable around him and thought he had a “mental problem.” One time he came into her bedroom, kneeled down, and placed his face very close to hers as she lay in bed. She woke up and said, “What the hell are you doing?” He answered that he was her cousin and was just being friendly. She told him to get out of her room, and he complied. A few days later she wondered if he tried coming into a bathroom when she was taking a shower. The more she thought about it, the more certain she was that Shaw had been there in May or June 1994. He said spooky things to her, “You have pretty toenails. The man who marries you will be very lucky.”
In 1996, Kim got married and Shaw came to her wedding. At the wedding Shaw got drunk, and he touched Kim’s sister on the neck in an inappropriate manner. Her sister got mad at Shaw and they started arguing. Kim said, “When you looked him in the eye, he did not seem normal.”
Moving over to San Francisco, the detectives found that a car stolen from the San Bernardino area, with switched license plates, had been ticketed for parking illegally on Franklin Street in that city. This had occurred on June 6, 1994, six days after Jenny Lin had been murdered, about thirty miles away in Castro Valley. Just what Shaw might have been doing in San Francisco at that time, the detectives didn’t know.
