Jenna
Jax lifted a pint of orange juice from the bar. Sheâd settled on a stool, looking no worse for wear after a night of excess, if you discounted the fact that she was wearing sunglasses indoors. âHey, hey! Itâs Barbie and Ken!â
âItâs what and what, now?â Jenna looked around the clubhouse and tried to figure out who Ken was meant to be. She was certain sheâd arrived alone.
âI think sheâs talking about you and me.â Abi entered via the side door and sheepishly raised her hand. âHi.â
âOh. Hi. Um.â
Really cool.
Abi was still in her work gear and Jenna dragged her gaze from the floor, up over Abiâs Timberlands until she reached a white T-shirt with the sleeves removed to show off her incredible arms. The arms that had, less than twenty-four hours ago, pinned Jenna to the wall outside.
âAre you⦠okay?â Abi asked, pulling out a stool next to Jax.
âYes, Iâmâ¦â Jenna shook her head. She felt like sheâd been caught out turning puppies into coats, and she needed to get a grip. âI just need to run and check the kitchen was left tidy last night.â
Once safely on the other side of the kitchen door, she closed her eyes for a moment and tried to pull herself together. This was Abi, her friend with the caps lock on. Who was now her friend with the caps lock on who she desperately wanted to ask out, despite zero experience in that area and the small complication of a third wheel.
She glanced around the room, satisfied that it was clean, except for the cake box still sat on the far work surface. With any luck, it would contain leftovers; a sure-fire way to diffuse any awkwardness. She jogged over and flipped open the top to find the tattered remains of her football cake, which now looked like the pitch around mid-season after itâd been rained on and churned for weeks. Not that Abi would care.
When Jenna returned, Jax had an iPad in hand and flipped open the cover. âShall we go over these logos?â
âYes!â Work Jenna could definitely handle this. She was confident and assertive, unlike the bumbling wreck who still wanted to hide out in the kitchen.
Jenna set the cake down on the bar next to Jaxâs satchel and waited as she tapped through to a grid of images, all with a running themeâAbi. Gone was the crude clip art of a gardening fork, and in its place was a burly woman in overalls wielding a shovel.
Abi tilted her head. âTheyâre great, but theyâre very⦠me focused.â
âThatâs because you are your business. Youâre what people buy into.â
Jenna took the iPad from Jax and pinched to zoom in. âI couldnât agree more.â She pointed to the one she liked best, feeling far more at ease. âYou really need to play on this. Itâs your brand. And if you wanted to, you could totally expand by hiring more women.â
âExpand?â Abi frowned, then flagged down the barmaid when she appeared carrying a box of crisps from the storeroom.
