Brigadier-General Lowther’s report is so wanting and incomplete that it is not possible to learn therefrom the steps which he took to carry out the spirit of the instructions given him by his divisional commander … It appears to me clear that the Brigadier had little grasp of his brigade or of the situation.19

In modern parlance, he was ‘gripping’ the situation. He was also very much involved in low-level tactical debates on the use of weapons, making best use of his experience from Hythe School of Musketry. He collated reports on the use of machine guns, including the need for reliable Vickers models, rather than the older Maxims, and the requirement to obtain shields for protecting machine guns. He wanted better training in trench warfare, concealment and maintenance of defensive positions and he was helping to develop the use of trench mortars, hand grenades and rifle grenades.20

Field Marshal Sir John French visited his headquarters on 13 February and congratulated Monro and his divisional commanders ‘on the success of the recent minor operations’. On 9 March 1915, Monro reported to Haig that ‘his corps was in splendid condition’,21 and his performance in the war so far was recognised in the same month when he was appointed a knight commander of the Order of the Bath. He had a sound reputation.
