Seventh period. Students sat in their classes, twitching with nervous anticipation. Gustave watched as Mrs. Bertelsmann did everything within her power to keep the class tasked on advanced calculus, but with every passing moment, and as her frustration mounted, he saw the look in her eyes when she accepted the inevitable truth: sheâd lost her edge over the class.
When the class heard the scratching of the PA system as someone in the principalâs office turned on the microphone, a silence fell over the class and everyone turned to gaze at the speaker mounted above the doorway.
Mr. Harveyâs sonorous voice came over the PA system. âI am pleased to announce the results of the student class elections.â
Gustave let his breath out with a shuddering gasp. He gazed down at his page of Sudoku scratchings, representing the game he loved to play and the virtual family heâd created, and realized there was no way on earth heâd be able to concentrate on this until after he learned his fate. With a weary sigh, he tucked the papers into his book bag, zipped it closed, and pushed it under his desk. He rested his hands on the desk. Well, one good thing. He wasnât trembling anymore.
âStarting with the Freshman Class,â Mr. Harvey said.
âGroovy Gustave!â a voice down the hallway cried out.
The advanced calculus class stirred, then chuckled.
âThe new sophomore class president will be Gayle Erhardt, vice-president will be Jim Edwards, secretary will beââ
âGroovy Gustave!â a boy seated behind Gustave said.
Gustave smiled faintly. To come this far, and then to fail . . . how would he handle it? But then again, did it really matter? Did any of it really matter? Even if he didnât win, did it matter? No, he realized with a sudden flush of relief, it didnât. It didnât matter one bit.
There was life after high school, this he knew. The torture, the name-calling, the bullying bullshit heâd endured ever since kindergarten would end once he received his high school diploma and he could kick the dust of this miserable, fucking town off his feet and never return, ever again.
He squeezed his hands together. He was a knot of nerves and tension again. Mindy, seated to his left, reached over and squeezed his arm. âYouâll get it!â she whispered. âIâve got faith in you.â
âHm,â he mused. He craned his neck around and saw Mona, seated behind him and at the end of the row, up against the back wall. When she noticed him gazing at her, she gave him a grin and the thumbs up sign.
I donât think Iâve ever seen Mona looking so pretty as she does right now.
He glanced at her one more time. She beamed at him, happy, smiling, joyful. She was his best friend, he realized with a sudden, sharp pang of surprise. Heâd known her all their lives, but in just the past year, sheâd suddenly blossomed, lost weight, turned so pretty, and it sure was a reflection of her new, self-found confidence, for she was still wearing her sexy costume.
