Chapter Eight

“How was dinner with the in-laws?” Mallory asked her mother as they settled down to breakfast in the hotel restaurant. To her relief, Kara’s father, brother, and Siobhan were nowhere to be seen. They had apparently finished and left the dining area, as hoped.

“I try not to be judgmental. They’re not bad people. Just a little stuck in their ways.”

“Piper’s up in our room right now, no doubt telling Kara all the reasons she should break up with me.”

“Well, let her. Do you think Kara will listen?”

“I don’t think so. I mean, no. No, she won’t.”

“Glad to hear it.”

Her mom’s questioning expression prompted Mallory to sigh and fling up her hands in surrender. “Okay, so I’m not a hundred percent sure. It’s no secret Kara and her parents are from a very different world than the one you and I live in. They’re so…so corporate. It’s all about rules, appearances, and tradition with them. And we’re free spirits.”

“I make no apologies for that. And you shouldn’t, either.”

“I don’t. Well, not really. I just feel so insecure when I’m around them. And Siobhan gives me a bad vibe.”

“Do you remember your first girlfriend in college? Denise and I knew that wouldn’t last. You and she were too much alike. It went from being a partnership to a rivalry. That’s why it ended. I’m sure you realize that now.”

Mallory smiled wryly at the memory. “I was so upset. I blamed myself, and I was so sure you’d think I blew my big chance at love. I tried to hide our breakup from you.”

“You couldn’t. We knew it was over. Maybe before the two of you did.”

Mallory managed a laugh. “What do you think Denise would make of all this? Vegas, I mean…my wedding?”

“She’d be happy for you. But she’d also tell you to call it off if it feels wrong. I say the same. Worse comes to worse, I had a little vacation. So it’s all good.”

“I hope it won’t come to that. I just worry something bad’s going to happen.”

Her mother’s expression turned serious. “You actually have good reason to worry. I suppose we ought to talk about the elephant in the room now?”

“Do we have to?”

“Part of what’s bothering you is that you believe you tricked her into proposing—or whatever the right word is for casting a love spell on someone. I probably don’t need to ask if you’ve sat down and talked to her yet.”

“I tried. More than once. But something or someone always interrupted.”

Her mother rolled her eyes. “I was born at night, Sugar Cookie, but it sure as hell wasn’t last night.”

“Okay, okay, so I could have tried a little harder.” Mallory felt heat rush to her cheeks. “The truth is, Mom, I’m afraid she’ll get mad and call the wedding off. Then she’ll break up with me for good. There, I said it.”

“If she does, then she isn’t the one. To put it in Vegas terms, you have to risk it all here, Mal. The stakes are too high for you to do anything else.
