HAD TO supervise an exam today. There’s nothing more boring than that. People don’t generally cheat, but you have to be on the lookout. Mind you, it’s pretty tough, considering the size of our sports hall. It’s hard to see what people are doing. I think the exam was chemical engineering.

I had lunch with Adam and Sarah. Adam’s Ancient Greece, and he came back a couple of weeks ago from his sabbatical. They’ve invited me to go to this conference in August, in the States. It’s a big Ancient Civilisations thing, but that’s not my terrain. Also, I was planning on doing nothing this summer.

That never works out—usually I catch up on the article I’m writing, start research on another one, that sort of thing.

But… this time I have a boyfriend! This time I might actually go somewhere!

I should ask Alex about that. He’s out with Michael and some of his other friends tonight. He wanted me to go with them, but I’ve piles of work to do, and I’ve had a trying day.

“Not going to Sydney, eh?” Jack said when he found me standing by the kettle in the rec room. “I should have thought that was your very thing. Didn’t you come up with the idea for that project? Isn’t the end goal a series of popular historical books? Have you suddenly become allergic to success?”

“Shut up,” I grumbled.

“Or is it your working-class boyfriend that’s keeping you back?” he mused. “That’s it, isn’t it? Gary….”

“Alex!”

“Right, Alex wants to throw weights around in London, and so you have to stay in London too,” he said with a sad sigh. “My dear, if you take my advice—”

“Oh yes, please,” I bit out. “Go ahead and teach me how to lead a happy life. Let’s see… if I want to date a man, shouldn’t I first get engaged to a woman? Yes, right, there we go. I’ll ask Sarah. She’d do, wouldn’t she?”

Sarah was just walking past, and she startled at hearing her name. “What’s that, pet?”

“I’m proposing to you,” I told her. “I think you and I should get married.”

“I’m already married,” she told me patiently.

“Perfect! I think that makes it all the better, doesn’t it, Jack? I’m not sure, but you’re the expert in fucked-up relationships. Go on, enlighten us!”

He sighed condescendingly. “As someone who is older and more experienced, take it from me. Adonis comes and goes, but these kinds of career opportunities don’t come around very often. This one’s golden. I’d go. I think you should go. Gary can come with you, or perhaps you can try it long distance. Whatever it takes, Leo.”

Then he gave me his most charming smile and left, as always with the last word, as always utterly unsinkable. Bastard.

Sarah watched him go and then tilted her head at me. “That Australia thing?”

“Yes,” I grumbled. “I’m not going. I don’t know how the hell he found out.”

“Oh, you should go, pet! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity, and that sort of
