Chapter Thirty
It was gone midnight by the time weâd got the beds built. I was knackered and all but dead on my feet, but willing to get it all done. I wanted to make this feel like home for them all.
âOkay, enough. We both need some sleep. I can finish this in the morning while youâre working,â Lisa said, coming up behind me, her palm resting on my shoulder.
I lifted my head and looked up at her. She was right. âSure.â I put the Allen key down and pushed up from the squat position I was in. My legs felt like jelly and I wobbled.
âWoah.â She grabbed my arm as I fell against her, our arms wrapped around one another as we steadied ourselves. She felt warm, and god, she smelt good.
âSorry,â I whispered.
Her eyes searched my face. âItâs okay, but you need to go to bed, and I donât mean the couch.â She smiled at me and took my hand, leading me from the room to my own room.
âIâll be fine on the couch,â I said once I realised her plan.
âYou will not. Get changed, get into bed, and go to sleep.â She stood there, hands on hips, just staring at me. I imagined this was how the boys felt when they were being told off.
âFine, I donât have the energy to argue.â
âGood. Because there is room enough for us both, and itâs not like weâve never done it before, is it?â She must have seen the look on my face because she laughed. âSleep, Frankie, notâ¦â
I didnât get the chance to answer. She grabbed her sleepwear and headed off to the bathroom. I ran a hand through my hair before pulling off my shirt. I opened a drawer and pulled out an old t-shirt and some jogging bottoms. I needed a shower.
The door opened and I turned towards it. She stopped in her tracks, and that was when I remembered I was standing in my bra and jeans. I pulled my arms up quickly, feeling the heat on my cheeks instantly. âI just needâ¦â I chuckled. How ridiculous was I being? I wasnât bothered about getting changed in front of people. I certainly had nothing to worry about. I worked out, and I was physically fit and healthy. And this was Lisa; she had seen me much more intimately naked already. âI just need to grab a quick shower,â I said, dropping my arms and giving her something to gawp at. To my delight, she did. Her eyes scanned me up and down quickly, and I was sure she thought maybe I hadnât noticed, but I had. So, I walked towards her and held my head high.
âSorry, yes. Right, okay, Iâllâ¦do you want a glass of water, or anything?â she said, shaking herself out of it and moving aside so I could pass through the doors.
Under the water, I let my thoughts wander. Sometimes, it felt like I was in a dream. Lisa had appeared in my dreams at least once a week for the years, so it was a normal feeling for me.
