Chapter 14

“Complication?” Eduard said with a stiffening posture. He felt as if his heart had dropped out of his body and was replaced by a big boulder. “What might that be? Is it because I am just a commoner and have no noble title?”

“No, the fact that you have no title does not matter to us. Titles can be dangerous nowadays,” Peter said, clutching his neck. “It is this--Annise was promised to another man.”

“I was?” Annise shouted in a high-pitched voice. She looked thoughtful. “Oh yes, now I remember. But they left the country a year ago. You mean that engagement is still valid?” She looked intensely at Eduard. “It is the son of the adjoining estate to our property. At least, what used to be our property. He is a young marquis.” Tears came to her eyes. “Mere, Pere, I love Eduard. He risked his life, along with his friends’ lives for you. You will just have to give your blessings for us to get married.”

“It is not that simple, my cherri,” Peter said, putting his arm around her shoulders. “The Marquis de Castellane, Lukas’s father, and I had a gentleman’s agreement that our children were to wed when both of you turn eighteen. Just because they fled to England does not void the contract. I understand they live in a palace near Southampton. They will be eager and happy to give us shelter, especially when our children are wed.”

“Mere, Pere, I like Lukas, but I love Eduard,” Annise pleaded with tears running down her cheeks. “Please find a way to get out of this agreement.”

“I am a gentleman, and to us, our word is binding. I am sorry my love, and Eduard, but I am not at liberty to give you two my blessings.”

“In ten days, I will have my eighteenth birthday. Please, Papa, think of a way for this engagement to become invalid.”

“I can think of a way,” Azelma said. “But I will not mention it.”

Peter gave her a puzzled look then realized what she was thinking. “It certainly would not be something a lady would tell her daughter.”

Gabriel moaned softly. “I have been sitting too long now. I need to get into my bunk.” He rose and started down the ladder, “Bonne nuit, everyone. I enjoyed the evening. Cheer up, Eduard and Annise. You two are meant for each other, and all will be well.”

“I hope so, Gabriel,” Annise said. “Goodnight and sleep well,”

“It has been a long day,” said Peter, “Time for us to get our rest too. Come Azelma and Annise.”

Azelma followed her husband below, but Annise lingered on deck and waited for Ezio to go below. Once alone, she sat down next to Eduard and put her arms around him.

“Kiss me, please kiss me like you have never kissed me before.”

Eduard wrapped his arms around her body, put his lips to hers, and kissed her, allowing his tongue to feel as far as it could reach. She reacted by breathing hard, and her hips started to gyrate.
