When I opened my eyes—I didn’t know if it was minutes or hours later—I was in a bed. Disoriented, I looked up into the anxious face of Dr. Harrod.

“What…?”

“You fainted. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you didn’t know about your abilities—or the level of them, at any rate. How are you feeling? Your head took quite a knock when you hit the floor,” he said worriedly. He lifted one of my eyelids and shone a light into it. “I don’t see any signs of a concussion, but if it weren’t for our patient in the next room, I’d be keeping you to be sure.”

“No, I’m fine,” I insisted. “Shawn? Is he okay?” I asked. “How long have I been in here?”

“Just a few minutes. Your Shawn is just fine for the moment. As soon as I’m sure that you’re okay, I’ll let you up, but for now, I’d like to get a CT to be sure.”

I frowned at that. My head was splitting, but I seriously doubted that falling from the chair to the floor would cause any damage that warranted a CT Scan. “I’m fine,” I insisted.

Harrod was shaking his head before I could finish. “I’m the doctor here, Amethyst. I’m the one that determines when you’re fine.”

“I really want to get back to Shawn. I’m not sure how to explain it, but something told me that I needed to be here for him. I knew that something was wrong and raced to the hospital to get to him. I’m don’t want to be away from him any longer than absolutely necessary,” I said softly. “But I wouldn’t refuse something for the killer headache.”

“I’ll order something,” he said. “But I want you to take it easy.”

“I will,” I promised.

Obviously, he wasn’t happy about it, but Dr. Harrod helped me from the bed, and stood by to make sure I wasn’t dizzy, and then walked me back into Shawn’s room.

“Hey,” I said with a smile. “How are you feeling?” He looked a bit better, though still far too pale. I was a bit shaky myself, so I sat down in the chair next to the bed.

“I’m fine,” Shawn said. “But you’ve looked better.”

I chuckled at that, and Dr. Harrod lifted a brow. “He’s right, Amethyst. You’re pale.”

“I’m fine,” I assured them both. “Shawn, you should be resting. Why don’t you try to get some sleep?”

“I think you should go home and get some yourself,” he muttered, closing his eyes. “You’re tired.”

“I’m fine,” I assured him. Though Harrod raised that brow again, he remained silent and slipped from the room. I hoped to order something for my darn headache.

“What happened to you? I heard a lot of commotion in the hallway.”

“Oh, something with one of the patients,” I lied easily. I knew he wouldn’t let me stay with him if he thought something was wrong with me. And, I also knew that there was no way I was leaving him alone until I was completely sure he was out of danger.

Something was certainly making him go downhill every time I wasn’t with him.
