LATE NIGHT ENCOUNTER

Near midnight, the band stops playing to shouts of ‘Iceberg!’ Then, a thud, a violent shudder, and the liner’s port hull buckles, metal screeching. Water gushes through cracks—everyone is ordered to abandon ship.

Some lifeboats are lowered but I join passengers who jump into the icy water. It is hard to breathe—my limbs soon grow numb treading water.

Then, I see it—a huge, pale, undulating hulk, its massive tentacles grasping the ship and the lifeboats, which are quickly crushed, people shouting and screaming. Starting to slip under, I shout out ‘That’s no bloody iceberg!’
