Chapter Eight

THREE DAYS later, a little wobbly but feeling better than she had in weeks, Mrs. Price sat at the kitchen table guzzling a pot of tea and ravenously demolishing a cheese omelet and an enormous mound of country-fried potatoes. Bo stood at the sink with his back to her, washing a chicken carcass, whistling a breathless little tune, and impatiently nudging Leo away from his feet. Leo loved chicken, and he was being a real pain in the ass about it. The only sound in the air, other than Bo’s whistling, was the clatter of Mrs. Price’s cutlery.

“What are you making?” she asked around a mouthful of food.

“Chicken croquettes for the master’s lunch.”

“Are you using my recipe?”

“No. I’m using my own.”

“Hmm.”

The screech of a knife on china. “These fried potatoes are delicious. Palm oil?”

“Canola. Lower in saturated fat. I would prefer to use macadamia oil. It has a nutty taste that’s really delicious, but with the master’s high blood pressure, canola is better.” Like I give a shit, he thought.

“You served Roger fried potatoes?”

Sigh. “He requested them. Said he smelled them when I made them for Larry and me a couple of weeks back.”

“Not once in thirty years did he ever ask me for fried potatoes.”

Bo grinned, turning to her. “Do I detect a pang of disgruntlement?”

“Of course not. How are you and Larry getting along?”

Turning his back to the woman again, Bo glowered at the chicken carcass lying dismembered in the sink. Now why would she be interested in that, pray tell? “We’re getting along fine, Mrs. Price. Why do you ask?”

She wiped her plate clean with a crust of toast, averting her gaze. “No reason. There’s a hickey on your neck, you know. It’s been there for three days.”

From the one and only time Larry and I had sex. “It’s probably a mosquito bite.”

“Yes, I’m sure that’s what it is.”

Bo gazed down at Leo, who had flopped over on his back on top of his foot and was currently gnawing at Bo’s pant cuff, his little paws waving in the air, his tail sticking straight out behind him like a rudder. Bo wondered what sort of shitstorm he would release if he stomped on the little fucker’s head.

You’re still playing the game, Bo said to himself. Don’t forget you’re still playing the game.

“I think he’s afraid of me,” Bo said quietly. It wasn’t all pretense either. He truly was still astounded by the way Larry had shut him out.

Mrs. Price looked up sharply. “What do you mean? Who’s afraid of you?”

Bo still leaned against the sink, staring down. He rubbed Leo’s belly with his other foot, shooting for gentle rather than homicidal. When he spoke his eyes never left the dog. “Larry. He’s not admitting it even to himself, but I think he’s afraid I’m going to break his heart.”

Mrs. Price sat perfectly still, watching him. “And are you?”

Bo frowned. “Of course not. At least I hope I won’t.”

“Perhaps you’re rushing the relationship. There’s no hurry, you know.
