Chapter Nine
As the limousine climbed and wound its way around the mountain, dawn broke the night like a hatching bird, chipping its shell and glimpsing, for the first time, the light of the world through a crack in the darkness. That’s how Allegra imagined Kate would have seen it, and the thought of her still-sleeping lover brought a wave of joy to her face.
A single ray of sunlight turned the dirt road to dusty gold, although the forested land about them remained cloaked in nocturnal shadows. Allegra stared ahead, then glanced at the young woman who had taken Dewitt’s place in the driver’s seat beside her. Her hair was the color of wheat—almost the color of the gold-lit road—much longer and straighter than her own black hair. “Oh, Keziah...” Allegra said, collecting her thoughts just enough to respond to her cousin’s many questions about the party. “To think Mildred was even there.” Allegra released a burdened sigh. “I just prayed she wouldn’t make a scene.”
“Lady Lutz?” Keziah laughed impassively. “Be serious. She knows better.” She turned to Allegra with violet eyes that twinkled with the vibrancy of unearthly treasures. “I just can’t believe you saw her there.”
“How do you think I felt?” Allegra rested her arm against the door, leaned her head in her hand. “From what I gather, women tolerate her socially to avoid getting on her bad side.”
“I didn’t know Mildred had a good side.”
“Apparently, she’s known for snooping around private property, always looking for something to report...illegal additions or improvements that might warrant a tax increase.”
“Mildred’s still snooping, is she? When will she ever learn her lesson.” Keziah winked. “Personally, she’s far too obstinate for my taste.”
“Are you sure she won’t warn Kate?”
“She’s too self-serving a woman for goodwill,” Keziah remarked with cold confidence. “She’d never jeopardize her safety in the name of altruism. How well does Kate know her, anyway?”
“They’ve only met once or twice. Kate can’t stand her.”
“Your Dr. Gallagher sounds like my kind of woman.”
Allegra sighed again as she gazed out the window, watching the land grow higher, the mountain whisking her away from the woman in whose arms she longed to be. “Now what do I do?”
“Just what you said you’d be content to do...you hold on to the gift of a memory.” Keziah patted her knee sympathetically, “It’s all you can do.”
“I suppose...” Allegra let her head bounce back against the upholstery. “Thank you for meeting me.”
“What are cousins for? Besides, Dewitt couldn’t stay awake. He was a nervous wreck waiting for your call—you know how fidgety he gets near sun up.” Keziah gave a sympathetic smile. “So how did you leave things?”
“With Kate? I didn’t. I waited until she was sound asleep before I called Dewitt I didn’t want to chance her offering to drive me home.” Allegra squirmed and repositioned herself, as if she could still feel Kate between her legs. “I watched her for a while, then left a note.... I would have given anything to have stayed, Keziah...anything.”
