Restless and anxious, I didn’t know what to do with myself. Once I parked the car, I jogged over to Anna’s, taking the front porch steps two at a time, to see if Kimmie was home. Seconds after I knocked, Kimmie yelled she was going to get it right as she opened the door.

“What are you doing here?” She poked her head out farther to see if someone was with me.

“I came to see if you wanted to hang out.”

“Duh.” She picked up her shoes and yelled to her parents that she was leaving with me. She didn’t wait for response before she placed a hand on my chest to shove me out of the way and shut the door behind her.

She sat down on the porch steps to tie her shoes. “So what are we doing?”

I shrugged my shoulders and leaned against the porch railing. “No idea, I just don’t want to be at home.”

“You want to shoot hoops or something?”

“Hells yes.” I had way too much energy and would drive my mother crazy if I went home now.

She smiled, flipped the lid of a plastic bin on their porch, and lifted out a basketball.

She bounced it as we walked to a nearby park that had a decent court. She wasn’t a great player—in fact, she was really bad—but she put her heart into playing.

Kimmie didn’t say much except how happy she was to have an excuse to leave the house. Right before we got to the court, I hung an arm over her shoulder and she leaned into me and patted my chest. “I love your guts. Always.” She giggled.

I loved hers, too.

The next hour was all about me kicking her butt. She was a good sport and laughed while she trash talked. We left sweaty and stinky, so I treated her to ice cream.

When we reached her house, she plopped down on her porch and patted the spot next to her. I sat and leaned back onto my elbows, thinking about Anna—again. I was annoying myself.

“So...” she finally said.

“So,” I repeated.

“Anna said you had a date tonight.”

“I did, but I took her home early.” Please, don’t ask me why.

“Why?” She smirked while bouncing the ball between her legs.

“She’s not Anna.” The words flew out before I could think about them.

She stopped bouncing the ball and looked at me. “Nope, she isn’t.” Kimmie shook her head with a little gleam in her eye. “Ryan, make the first move. You can do it. I believe in you,” she teased.

“I don’t want to do it while she’s with David. If she likes him, then I’ll be happy for her.”

“You realize she’s only with him because you’re chicken.” I bumped her shoulder while she laughed. “Seriously, Ryan, you guys belong together.”

“I know.” I let out a long-suffering sigh.

“I don’t know what to do with you guys. She comes home from dates looking like she was hanging out with any old friend instead of someone she is supposed to like, and you come home from a date looking like you were tortured.
