12. Lust

Anne Bonny quickly dressed in proper shipboard attire and joined Mary Read, Jack Rackham and three other crewmen on the main deck to help them with loading the provisions. In addition to the expected fresh fruits, vegetables and bread that was being brought aboard there was also a whole spit roasted pig, a gift from Richard Thompson, which Jack said would be feasted upon that evening. “This will be an excellent way to welcome our new crewmembers,” He added. “Mister Condent has recruited five men to join our company, and he’ll be bringing them aboard shortly, once Mister Featherstone is back.”

Anne and Mary were able to sneak coy smiles at each other while carrying the goods below deck, but since there could be no more privacy today they both knew that they were not going to be able to talk openly with each other. However, when the last of the crates had been stored Mary touched Anne’s arm and nodded to the armory at the back of the hold. “I’ll be checking the flintlocks tomorrow afternoon Anne,” She said. “I’d really appreciate it if you’d be able to come by and give me a hand.”

Anne’s face immediately wrinkled up and she bit her lower lip into a smile. “I’d be delighted to,” She managed to eke out, nodding eagerly.

George Featherstone and most of the rest of the crew returned to the William around 7 o’clock that evening and told Jack that Chris Condent and his recruits were one their way, having just left them at one of the taverns where they had been signing papers. Jack ducked into his cabin where he donned his jacket and tricorn and he and George then waited at the top of the gangplank. Chris and a group of men carrying bundles were soon visible as they made their way along the dock towards the ship

Chris first came aboard with one of the men in tow behind him. “Captain, you might remember Richard Corker, he was my old quartermaster. He’s joining us as bosun.”

“Indeed, it’s nice to see you again Mister Corker.” Jack shook his hand. “Welcome aboard. You’ll be working closely with Mister Featherstone, here, our shipmaster.”

Chris stood opposite the captain and master, turned to the remaining four men in a neat row at the foot of the gangplank, and beckoned to them. “Come aboard individually and announce yourself.” He made a friendly swoop with his right arm.

The first man in line marched attentively up to the rail. “John Davis,” He announced. “Master gunner reporting for duty.”

“And by your demeanor an old navy man like myself, I presume?” Jack smiled and nodded his approval.

The next two in line were Thomas Earl and John Howell, both gunners, and the fourth man was James Dobbin, cook and striker.

The new crewmembers were sent below to stow their belongings and Chris and Jack walked towards the women who had been standing by the rail to see the new men coming aboard. “Chris has done well,” Mary told Anne.
