I’m completely at ease in front of any camera. I can sing into a hairbrush in the mirror with the best of them. But, get on stage, in front of a crowd of real life people? Scary.

Even if you hire a top choreographer to teach you (shout out, Cris Judd!), you’re only as good as your ability and determination. No matter how many backup dancers and musicians are on stage behind you, when you’re upfront, the center of attention, you are alone. Eyes on you. Expectations on you. It can be a lonely place—or the greatest spot in the world. You have only yourself, the hours of sweat you’ve put into a performance, and your raw courage to get you through. One thing I learned from Cris—and this applies to singing on stage, presenting a PowerPoint at work, any public speaking or performance on any level—is to command attention with stillness. Just stand still. Make the audience look at you, and listen to you. If you can stand still and capture their attention, you’ve got them in the palm of you hand. I had to learn that the hard way. I fought the urge to move around. When I found my own still center, it was like discovering gravity.
