Chapter Twelve

“You sure you got it?” I asked as Travis walked into the extra bedroom with the desk. I had bought it online and we had just got back from picking it up.

“Yeah, Julie, it’s not too heavy,” he said, setting it down.

I looked at it, and then turned to him and smiled. “Sorry, I changed my mind. Put it back near the window, please.”

He laughed, then easily picking it up, moved it back, and centered it by the window. It was an older desk made of wood, nothing fancy, but I had gotten a good deal on it used, and it seemed to me to be the perfect author’s desk.

“Does that work?”

“It’s perfect,” I said, running my hand across it, feeling the rough grain of the wood. I looked up at him. It was like what Veronica said the other night. He was grieving, it was all over his face, and I wanted to help him.

“You know what we should do?” I asked, taking his hand.

“What’s that?”

“Let’s go to Johnnie 80s. We haven't been together in forever. It’ll be like old times!” I said, giving him a smile.

“I appreciate it, but I should go study,” he said.

Disappointment washed over me, and I needed to convince him otherwise. “Oh, come on, let’s have some fun. I’ll tell you what, we can go to Three Peaks Mall afterward. I’ll buy you an ice cream,” I said, giving him my best puppy dog eyes.

A small smile lifted his lips. “All right. Give me ten minutes?”

“Deal. I need to change as well.”

I headed to my bedroom as he went to his. Digging through my dresser, I pulled out a pair of jeans and putting them on, a smile crossed my face. Hopefully going out would get Travis out of his shell and me out of mine. I grabbed the shirt Veronica had bought for me at the Terror in the Park. I put it on and then checked myself out in the mirror. The dark denim with the red rose on the upper breast looked good on me. It fit me pretty tight, and looking sideways in the mirror, it was cut just perfectly. Satisfied, I went over to the closet. I grabbed a pair of heels, slipped them on, then headed back to the vanity mirror.

Grabbing some makeup, I touched up my face and put on some red lipstick. Then taking the eye shadow, I put some on. I usually wore my makeup light, but I just had this urge to try something different.

“There,” I said, then puckered my lips, laughing at my own reflection.

Turning to the side, I felt my cheeks go red and my heart beat a little faster. Undoing my shirt, I tucked it in, my grin going even wider. The outfit was clinging to my breasts really emphasizing them, which was something I was not used to. I grabbed my purse and opened the door right as Travis walked out of his room.

“Hey Julie…wow, you look different,” he said, looking me up and down.
