TWELVE

Getting the older woman’s car unstuck from the snow had proved more of a task than either Matthew or the clerk had anticipated. As he watched the car pull away, he felt good about what they had been able to do for someone in need.

The clerk patted him on the back. “Thanks, man.”

The back door he had come out of burst open, and Jamie ran out. “Matthew!”

Even at a distance, Matthew could see the terror on the boy’s face. He ran toward him. The door swung open again and one of Elwood’s thugs emerged holding a gun.

Just as Jamie ran into Matthew arms, the thug slipped on the ice, landing on his back. The gun fell out of his hand and spun out of reach across an icy patch.

Matthew pushed Jamie behind him and scrambled to pick up the gun. He pointed it at the thug as he got to his feet. The thug shook his head and ran back around to the front of the building.

“Where’s your mother?”

Jamie pointed to where the thug had run.

“Stay with him.” Matthew tilted his head toward the clerk. With the gun still in his hand, he sprinted around the corner just in time to see the thug jump into the passenger seat.

Fear seized his heart. Rochelle was in there. As the van backed up, he ran toward it, grabbed on to the side mirror and banged on the window with the gun. The gun flew out of his hand as the van gained speed and headed toward the street. His arm muscles strained. He knew he couldn’t hold on much longer. The menacing face of Rochelle’s kidnapper taunted him as he fell off and landed in a snowbank.

Jamie and the clerk came around the corner of the building. Jamie ran toward him as the clerk went back into the store. Matthew rose to his feet.

“Where’s my mom? Where is she?”

Matthew shook his head.

Jamie’s face turned red. Even as tears streamed down the boy’s face, his voice filled with rage. “Why didn’t you stop them?”

“I tried, buddy.” His throat constricted from the sympathy welling up inside him. His heart ached for what might become of Rochelle. He would never forgive himself. Why hadn’t he just stayed close to them?

Jamie slammed against him so hard he almost fell over. At first, the boy beat his fists against Matthew’s chest, but gradually he hugged Matthew and sobbed.

He’d seen the van make a turn, and he knew it was moving slowly because of the snow. There was still a chance for him to save Rochelle.

“Come on, Jamie. Let’s get in the car. We might be able to catch them. I’m not giving up yet.”

They reached the car and jumped in.

Police sirens wailed in the distance and grew closer.

He got the car turned around and headed toward the street. He watched the van signal a right turn ahead.

The sirens grew louder. A police car pulled into the convenience store parking lot.

An officer got out and stalked toward their car.
