CHAPTER 12

He livin’ wild…

woman’s touch

Aisha and I were talking all the time.

“I’m on the phone, Ulysses,” Mama said. “It is my phone,” she repeated.

Or at least we were trying to.

This was before the average cat had cellphones and two-ways weren’t even a thought. Even if you did have a cellphone, that shit was so big, it was like putting a mini-refrigerator to your ear. There was no way you could hide it. And as nosy as Mama was, something that big would really catch her attention. Especially since she knew she couldn’t afford it.

“I’m on the phone,” Harvey said. “Ain’t your mama taught you no manners, jumping in grown folks’ conversations?” he continued.

Between Mama being on the phone with bill collectors and Harvey gossiping to his boys, I could barely get a call to or from Aisha. We didn’t have call-waiting, or at least not the kind everybody else had. Mama’s idea of call-waiting was if she was on the phone, whoever was calling had to wait until she got off.

But when I could get Aisha on the phone, we talked for hours.

It was young love. The New Edition “Mr. Telephone Man” kind of love. When it came down to a girl that you were into, it didn’t matter how much street you had, you’d bitch up in a heartbeat.

I did all the kind of stuff you do when you first meet a chick and you fall in love. Or so you believed. Thinking about her all hours of the day. Calling her late at night, not wanting to hang up when you know it’s way past both of your bedtimes.

“You hang up first,” she’d say.

“No, you,” I replied.

“No, you.”

“Okay. On three, we gon’ hang up. One…two…three.”

Of course, neither one of us hung up.

We were falling head over heels. Ever since LL dropped “I Need Love,” getting caught up was cool.

“You hit it yet?” Herc asked.

“What you think?” I shot back.

“You ain’t hit it,” Herc said, looking me dead in my eye.

“Of course I did.”

“How was it, then?”

“It was off the hook.”

“You ain’t hit that shit.”

“Fuck you.”

“No, fuck her, ” he said, laughing. “I’m your boy. You ain’t gotta lie on your dick to me.”

“Why not,” I said. “You lie on yours all the time,” I replied, laughing even louder.

“Nigga, fuck you,” he said.

“No, fuck her,” I said as he started chasing me.

Maybe I hadn’t hit it, but I was going to. I just couldn’t let Herc know. Some girls you don’t mind telling your boys about. How you hit it, when you hit it, how many times you hit it. But Aisha was special.

“Yo, that’s a fly chick you got, YG,” Buddha said, picking me up from Aisha’s house after I walked her home.

“You plan on getting wet, make sure you got a coat. You got one, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Where?”

I didn’t answer.

“Here,” he said, noticing the blank look on my face, reaching in his pocket and pulling out a condom. “Use it. The last thing you need is one of these hoodrats holding you hostage.
