TONIGHT AS EDDSY and Harriet eat their meals at the kitchen table, they discuss the direction Tomalin Garages should take. Harriet talks about how hybrid cars changed the industry a few years ago. Eddsy too recognised the change – with hindsight – but now he realises Harriet made the right call to equip their existing garages with expensive new tools and training to accommodate those changes. He remembers how he resisted her, but finally agreed when he saw her winds of change was right.

This time Harriet is talking about how fully electric cars are going to make an impact on their business if they don’t react. Already several manufacturers sell electric cars off the forecourt. It’s time to acknowledge fossil fuel engines are one day going to be a thing of the past. We need to react to the changes. Eddsy says maybe they should wait a few years, see what happens. Harriet shakes her head, says at the moment dealerships who sell electric cars also service them, but it’s time for independent garages to acknowledge that change. We should get in early. Retrain in the new technology. Besides, she’s been researching government subsidies into it. Tomalin Garages should grab them while they’re offered.

Eddsy doesn’t even hesitate to consider it. He almost didn’t listen to Harriet last time.

Maybe it’s time to open a seventh garage then, Eddsy says.

Yes. Make it for electric cars.

Eddsy grins.

Then if things take off like you think, won’t be long before we can build a seventh bedroom either then, wife.

Harriet presses her lips together at that.

Don’t.

Eddsy looks up from his meal.

No more bedrooms. Please.

Eddy smiles at her request then, but it’s with sadness. He reaches out, touches Harriet’s hand across the table, squeezes it.

No more bedrooms, he says.
