Chapter Ten

Caitlyn could feel Tally’s heartbeat thump in her chest beneath her head. She could also feel the tension in Tally’s body. Tally said she was willing to talk about what happened to her, but as of yet, she hadn’t spoken. Caitlyn regretted asking, stirring what were obviously painful memories for Tally. She lifted her head and gazed down at Tally, whose eyes were screwed shut. Tally’s breath came in quick gasps.

“Hey.” Caitlyn reached up and cupped Tally’s cool cheek. When her eyes fluttered open, the anguish they revealed nearly broke Caitlyn’s heart. “It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me.”

Tally gave a small smile and pushed her cheek harder into Caitlyn’s palm. “I’m all right. It’s just hard to talk about.”

“You don’t have to. I can see this is difficult.”

“I want to. You told me about your accident. It’s only fair I reciprocate.”

Caitlyn shook her head, her fringe falling into her eyes. “It isn’t a competition.”

“I know, but I want you to know me, all of me.”

Caitlyn gazed into Tally’s eyes for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.” She rested her head back onto Tally’s chest and waited. She didn’t care if it took all night for Tally to open up. She’d gladly wait forever if it made Tally more comfortable. She didn’t have to wait much longer. Tally’s voice was quiet, as she started to speak. Caitlyn kept a firm arm around Tally’s waist, hoping it helped to keep her safe and grounded.

“I told you about Ryan, my partner on the force. We were on the night shift. It was a Sunday night and quiet, for the most part. We patrolled around the city centre and nearby neighbourhoods, stopped for coffee, and responded to the occasional call. Everything was standard.

“About one in the morning, we were dispatched to a domestic disturbance. The details were sketchy. A neighbour had called in, saying she heard shouting and screaming coming from next door. She was worried about the woman who lived there. We just assumed it was a case of alcohol intoxication causing a row between husband and wife.

“We arrived and approached the door. We could hear them shouting. The woman was pleading with whomever it was to leave. He was screaming at her that he wasn’t going anywhere. Ryan knocked on the door and announced our presence. The shouting stopped. A moment later, the door flew open. This huge hulk of a man stood before us in nothing but jogging bottoms. His body was covered in sweat. His eyes were massive, nothing but pupil. It was clear he was more than just drunk.” Tally paused for a moment. “I pulled my taser from my waistband, and was about to order him onto the ground, when he bolted toward us. He knocked Ryan off his feet and blew past me. I gave chase. The guy jumped into his car. I went to the passenger side, Ryan to the driver’s side, and we fought to get him out of the car. I was half in, half out when the guy slung the car in reverse.
