Chapter Six

THE SOUND of voices brought him out of one of the best sleeps he’d had in a long time. He opened his eyes slowly, blinking at the light, to see Trey sitting up with his mother on the couch beside him. He didn’t really want to move, too comfortable beneath the blankets, but he knew Chloe would be desperate to use the litter box, if she hadn’t already tried to find somewhere hidden in the house, and he had no idea how to make that happen. His bladder also protested, demanding he get up. He conceded the fight and straightened in the chair.

“Oh, we didn’t wake you, did we, dear?” Mrs. Jenkins asked, concerned.

He shook his head and stood, stretching with a yawn. When he realized Trey was watching him, he flushed and dropped his gaze. Lane mumbled a good morning and fled the room to use the bathroom. Horror brought him up short as he saw himself in the mirror. His hair stuck up in several places and he had those icky crusty things in the corners of his eyes. He groaned and savagely combed his fingers through his hair. No matter how much he would like to impress Trey, somehow he kept showing Trey the bad side of himself. Of course, maybe now it wouldn’t be so hard for Trey to ignore him once he saw how Lane woke up in the mornings.

Sighing, he used the toilet, washed his hands and face, and squeezed out a little bit of the toothpaste sitting on the counter to finger brush his teeth.

After he made sure he no longer looked like something out of a horror movie, Lane exited and wandered back to the living area, his thoughts on how he’d find a makeshift litter box. Entering the living room, Lane halted and frowned when he saw Chloe wasn’t where he’d left her. Aww crap. He prayed she didn’t intend on peeing or pooping on the floor somewhere.

“Ma’s got Chloe,” Trey offered when he saw Lane’s expression.

Relief swamped him. “Oh. Okay.”

“She figured Chloe would need somewhere to go. She mentioned some of her old cat stuff was in the garage.”

Lane stood there, uncertain on what he should be doing right then. He had anticipated Chloe taking up his attention, at least for a little bit, but now that Mrs. Jenkins had taken that off his hands, he didn’t know how to keep his focus away from Trey.

“Come sit with me, Lane,” Trey said.

“I should—”

Trey stopped him with a look and Lane shifted a bit, biting his bottom lip in uncertainty.

“You do that a lot.”

Lane tilted his head to the side, not really understanding what Trey was talking about.

“Biting your lip,” Trey explained, shadows darkening his eyes, and Lane suddenly felt extremely hot all over.

He shrugged.

“Will you please come sit?” Trey asked again.

Stomach twisting, Lane walked the few feet to the couch and sank down on the edge, back straight as an arrow. He let out a surprised noise when Trey gripped his arm and yanked him against his side in a half hug.
