So my nighttime cuddling has progressed. I was suitably alarmed to find my hand groping Ellie’s boob this morning. I snatched my hand away so fast it made her jump out of her skin. To cover up the fact that I had been playing with her nipple in my sleep, I lied and said there was a bug that I batted away, hence the sudden movement. I didn’t stick around to see if she bought my bullshit. Instead, I made myself very busy getting us breakfast.

Now we have been walking for five and a half hours with a couple of ten-minute rests in between. We will have to go through the whole process of picking a place to camp for the night and building a suitable shelter. I think we could get a couple more hours under our belt before we do that, though.

The majority of our hike has been in companionable silence. Honestly, there’s so much to take in around here. I’m grateful we gave each other the chance to do so. The last time I was here was for training. Let me tell you, there isn’t much time for sightseeing in the Marines. As the time marches past, I’m becoming more and more interested in learning about Ellie. There are definitely two sides to this woman. I’m guessing that few people get to see the side I have glimpsed recently. Well, here goes nothing!

“So,” I begin, turning slightly so she knows I’m talking to her. “What’s it really like being you?”

“Being me?” she parrots, looking confused at my question.

“Yeah, being you. I mean I’m sure it’s a lot of parties and glamorous events. But I’m guessing it’s not all rainbows and butterflies.”

“Why are you asking?” I can see the paranoia shooting off her like a laser. Wow, she really doesn’t trust anyone.

“I’m genuinely interested. Look, we both admitted that when we first met, we were both acting…well, not being ourselves.” Her demeanor is telling me to back off. “Sorry, never mind, you don’t have to answer.” I turn away from her again and concentrate on the path ahead. A few beats go by, and then I hear her suck in a breath. Is she going to speak?

“I never wanted to be an actress,” she says quietly. I stay silent, hoping she’s going to continue. “My first love was a mutt named Arnold. He was our cook’s dog. I’m sure you know I grew up rich, even before the acting.”

“Yeah, I’ve read your IMDB.” I grin over my shoulder.

“Ha, right? So you know my mother’s side of the family is old money. Anyway, I really wanted to be a vet.”

“Really, a vet?”

“Yup. Not what you expected, right?”

Her tone is light, which I’m glad for. “Very surprising. So do you have a bunch of pets in your Hollywood mansion?”

“No.”

“Okay. So why didn’t you go to vet school?”

“My mother felt it wasn’t suitable.”

“But acting was?”

“Yes, she was the one who got me my first audition. Money opens doors, don’t you know?”

“Do you not like what you do?”

She blows out a breath in frustration.
