Chapter Eight
When I search her eyes, I see that Nikkiâs death has affected her more than what I thought it would. Not that sheâs not sad, she is. It makes her think more about life and what she can do with it besides working to prove a point. Life can be gone in a blink of any eye and she doesnât want that. I canât say that I blame her, but if she were to leave today, she would have a heavy heart. She didnât get to do what she wanted, always holding a grudge. I can understand that.
âWhatever you want to do I am here for you. I plan on going back to work full-time after all of this and Iâll update Lexi just like I told her I would.â I whisper to her.
âThank you, youâve done so much in helping me. I donât know what to say.â She shakes her head back and forth.
âThereâs nothing to say, thatâs what people do when they love someone.â I whisper to her, biting down on my lip.
She gives me a surprised look and I didnât mean for the words to come out like that. I didnât. I wasnât even sure the words were going to come out. Iâm just as surprised as she is.
âYou mean that?â She asks me.
I nod my head.
âWeâve only just started getting to know each other, but youâve been here for me already so much. Anyone else wouldâve thought this was just too much for them. My parents, my sister, all of this.â She looks up at the ceiling of the basement.
âIâm not like everyone else. I canât say that I like everything about you. I donât like how cold, you are, but thatâs because of your past. I didnâtâ know that you had a cold bone in your body until we came here last night. It surprised me, but I understand it too.â I explain to her.
Kevin calls to us and we rush up the stairs. Leaving the conversation for another time. I am glad that heâs called to us, because I donât know where the conversation wouldâve led us.
The letter that Nikki had written is on the table and I watch as Andi glances at it but doesnât touch it.
She walks right by it.
âAndi.â I call out her name.
âCome on, letâs get this done.â She clears her throat.
Her voice is strong now, I think that she takes after her father for that. When something horrible happens, she does her best to stay controlled until sheâs by herself or around someone she trusts.
I look at Kevin and I see him shrug his shoulder slightly. Iâm not going to get any help from him. He may be the man of the house, but he goes with the flow as much as he can I notice.
We bring the nightstand downstairs, we bring her rug, her dresser and the rest out of the room just to bring it to the basement.
By the time that weâre done its lunch time
