Call me.

A pang of guilt washed over me as I read her message.

My phone started to vibrate in my hand, signaling a phone call. How could she expect me to call her if she called me two seconds after texting me?

“I’ve gotta take this,” I told Maddie, holding up the phone. “My sister.”

Maddie nodded her agreement as I sucked in a deep breath, steeling myself for the conversation that awaited me.

“Finally,” Alicia said, exasperated.

“Hey, sis.”

“You could’ve told me you were going to be in Sydney. I had to find out from Instagram of all places.”

“I’m sorry, Alicia,” I murmured, my voice tinged with regret. “We’re only here a couple of days, and we’ll be spending most of it at trials. And I did send you a text message.”

Alicia’s sigh was palpable. “When you were already in the airport,” she complained. “The girls want to see their aunt.”

“I want to see them too,” I replied. “And you.”

“Come for dinner tonight. Your girlfriend too. Paul is out of town, so it’ll just be us girls.”

I glanced to where Maddie was waiting patiently for me to finish my call. A flutter of nerves danced in my stomach at the mention of Maddie and our relationship. “That sounds nice.”

“Great. I’ll text you my address. Six o’clock. Don’t be late.”

Before I could respond, Alicia had ended the call, a text coming through a moment later with her address.

“Everything okay?” Maddie asked as I lined up my shot.

“Alicia invited us for dinner.” I swung and sent the ball rolling toward the hole where it went through the obstacle perfectly, coming to a stop near the hole.

“That’s really nice of her.”

Another putt and the ball went wide.

“Maybe,” I said, lining up my shot.

“Well, at least it can’t be worse than the family dinner with my sister.”

Finally, my ball found its mark, sinking into the hole with a satisfying clink.

I hoped Maddie was right.
