Neither of them would last much longer in the cold water. Suddenly, she was just out of arm’s reach. She didn’t see him, her head continually dipping beneath the surface. He kicked his near-frozen legs and prayed for strength as his arms reached for her. His heart swelled with relief when he managed to grasp the hem of her skirt. He closed his fist around it.

They continued to be swept downstream, but inch by inch, he crawled his hands up the skirt until he managed to grab her around the waist. Her face was ghostly white, her lips turning a bluish-purple, her eyes wide with fear. He tucked her close, and she managed to clutch her fingers around the fabric of his sleeve.
