PART 3

ANDREW

Sixteen days ago

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

I hum to myself as the seven individuals disembark the tender. This is going to be so good. I try to keep the grin from showing on my face—wouldn’t want to give anything away. I play it as casual as possible, letting my false concern shine through, along with a little confidence. They always like to see that.

The money the group scrounged together to get me to do this is pitiful. It’s chump change compared to what I’m really getting paid. But hey, a little bonus cash never hurt anyone. It’s not like they’re going to be needing it.

“Have a productive day, guys. I’ll see you tonight!” I call when the last of them is gone. I smile and wave, watching how each of them has their own secret reservations but none willing to call it off.

“Remember, only shoot the flare if someone is dead!” Russ calls next to me.

I give him a look, trying not to laugh.

He shrugs, full of innocence. “What?”

How long will it take them to break? I wonder. Probably not long. It’s never very long.

“Let’s get out of here, Russ.”

We pull away from the small, broken dock at full speed, headed back for the cruise ship. I continue to hum to myself, counting all the dollar bills coming my way. This time has been easy—one of the easiest yet, but it’s nowhere near over. This is just the start.

“Cut that shit out,” Russ says.

“What? You don’t like my singing voice?”

“No, I don’t.”

“You’re always so worried. The money is already ours. What’s eating you?”

“You’re not worried at all?”

“Nope.” I brush the imaginary lint off my shoulder. “It’s a done deal.”

The lifeboat bounces as we hit wave after wave on our way back to the ship. Russ and I both hang on but it’s nothing we’re not used to. We travel the rest of the distance in silence, I’m thinking about the profits, and I’m sure Russ is thinking about the consequences of getting caught.

When we reach the ship, I bring out my satellite phone to text.

It’s done. We’re back.
