Chapter Six

Victor couldn’t believe it. First of all, that Hunter was getting so wrapped up in the idea that he was going to meet his mother and that everything was going to go swimmingly. In Victor’s experience nothing ever went as you expected. Even though Hunter was convinced, Victor wasn’t sure if this woman would turn out to be his mother at all. Leaving the forest for the open road, heading to the coast, provided Victor with an unsettling feeling. It led him to becoming a little agitated with Hunter, although it wasn’t justified at all, but the more he followed this course, the farther away he got from his parents. Writing the letter had brought forth many deep feelings and he knew he wouldn’t be able to stay away forever. He had no idea how he was going to tell Hunter though.

And then there was Red. Victor couldn’t believe it. Of all the chances…to meet him here…it was mind-boggling. As soon as they got in his truck Red had told them in no uncertain terms that they were to be silent, even though Victor had plenty of questions. He stared at the open road, watching the concrete slide by like a treadmill underneath the truck, his mind waiting for an opportunity to confront the driver. He should have sensed him at the diner, but Victor’s nose was overwhelmed with the stench of tired, grimy truck drivers and it had been difficult to glean anything specific.

He finally got his opportunity when they stopped for a restroom break. Hunter broke out his book to read a few pages while the motion had stopped, while Victor made the excuse that he needed to stretch his legs moments after Red had gotten out of the cab. The stop was populated with a few people who were taking a break from driving, but Victor only had one man in his sights. He followed Red around the wide building, his shoulders broad, his body tilted forward, ready to haul Red back. But, as he turned the corner, Victor had to stop abruptly as Red was waiting for him. Their eyes met and a steely glare passed between the two of them. Red jerked his head to the side and they walked off so that they wouldn’t be disturbed by the foot traffic passing by.

“What are you doing with him?” Red asked.

“That’s none of your business,” Victor replied curtly. Red studied him carefully, his eyes narrowed and beady. Victor could smell the tension on the man.

“It’s always my business. We have to watch out for anything suspicious. I’ve never come across a wolf and a human traveling together before. Our kind don’t mix.”

“I guess we’re the exception,” Victor replied. Red sighed heavily and folded his arms across his chest.

“I don’t want any smartass answers from you. I’m guessing you’re either young or stupid, maybe both. Weren’t you ever told of the history between us?”

“I’ve been told. I know more about it than you might think, but not enough to stop me from following my feelings.
