“Hello, Laurel,” Lottie said when they arrived with Adrienne to pick up Dr. Landry’s daughter. “Don’t you look nice in your uniform. Did you tie that bow yourself?”

When Lottie turned to smile at Laurel, Bonita saw that her mother looked particularly beautiful. Lottie wore a red linen dress piped in black. Her dark hair was tied at the base of her neck with a red-and-black-checked silk scarf. She wore silver bracelets and silver earrings in the shape of coins. Her cologne scented the entire car.

“Yes, ma’am,” Laurel said when she had settled back in the seat. She stuck her feet straight out. “And I tied my own shoelaces.”

“Aren’t you a smart girl,” Lottie said. “Are you excited about first grade?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Laurel said.

As they rode, Laurel and Adrienne began to whisper and giggle. Bonita, concerned there was a conspiracy brewing against Lottie, leaned over and whispered in Laurel’s ear, “If you say anything about my mother going to the doctor, I will take a gun and shoot you dead.”

“I didn’t say a word about your mother,” Laurel whispered.

“Well, if you do, I will kill you,” Bonita whispered.

“You don’t know how to shoot a gun,” Laurel whispered.

“Sure I do,” Bonita said. “I shoot guns all the time.”

“No whispering,” Lottie said from the front seat.
