Since I handed in my notice, every day at work has dragged. All I can think about is how different my day will be when I’m working at Delish. I’m in the kitchen making coffee when the door opens behind me and Chris appears, dressed in a sharp black suit with a white shirt and red tie.

‘Er, what are you doing here? You don’t work here anymore, remember?’

He strides straight into my space after kicking the door shut behind him, grabs me tightly and starts to kiss me.

‘Come to mine, straight from work,’ he murmurs. ‘I want you so bad.’

‘I can’t. I’m meeting a client about a wedding cake.’ Adam confirmed earlier by text that Debbie can make it tonight.

He groans and pulls a face. ‘You’re joking.’

‘I’m sorry. I’m clocking off early. I’ve got to get to the Post Office before it shuts.’

‘What client?’

‘Oh, no one you know.’

‘Where?’ he asks.

‘At a pub near mine.’

‘Can’t I come? I can sit quietly in the corner. No one will know I’m there.’

God! No. What if Adam’s there? ‘No. Look, I’ll ring you when I’m done. It shouldn’t be too late. Come over.’

He rolls his eyes and mutters, ‘Okay. Fine.’

‘I’m really sorry.’’ I kiss him again and pick up the drinks I’ve made. ‘What are you doing round here anyway, all dressed up?’

‘I’ve had a meeting.’

‘How’d it go?’

‘Good, yeah. So, I’ll see you later then.’ He leaves, still grumbling about tonight.

‘Thanks,’ says Pauline as I put her drink in front of her. Chris is almost at the door. I’m still watching him from the corner of my eye when he stops abruptly, spins round then walks briskly back over to my desk. He bends down, tilts my chin up and kisses me properly on the mouth. Not just a peck either. Pauline is leaning back in her chair, looking flustered and hot. For all I know, she could be hoping she’s next. From the heat in my cheeks, though, I’m probably redder than her.

‘She already knew,’ he says to me, his hands palm upwards. Then he flashes me a cheeky grin and leaves.

I turn to Pauline who is looking smug.

‘I’ve known for ages,’ she says.

‘Since when?’ I ask her.

‘Since I saw you two snogging at the Christmas party. I mentioned it to Chris ages ago and he admitted it. I’ve been waiting for you to tell me.’ Then she turns back to her work and calmly gets on with it.
