Chapter 10
âMonty was just moved a few hours ago from Doc Potterâs place over to the Rawhide Hotel where the doctor can easily check up on him three or four times a day,â Beason told them as they hurried down the street.
âHave you visited him yet?â Longarm asked.
âI have,â Beason answered, âbut he didnât want to talk. The kid just described Cain Hawker to me and then turned his head away. From what Iâve heard, Monty Allison is not the least bit sociable.â
âHeâs been badly beaten and our parents were murdered,â Cindy snapped in her brotherâs defense. âSo I donât see how you can blame Monty for being unfriendly.â
âMiss, Iâm not blaming your brother for anything,â Beason countered. âI sure didnât mean it to sound that way either. Given what your brother has been through, I reckon anyone would be bitter and upset.â
They arrived at the Rawhide Hotel and Beason said, âI knew you were coming so I took the liberty of booking you a couple of hotel rooms. Marshal Long, your room is on the first floor, Number four, and Miss Allison is on the second floor, Room Twenty-one, which is right next to her brother.â
âThank you,â Cindy told the young lawman as they swept inside the hotel, not even bothering to take in the nice lobby with its polished floor and dark walnut wood paneling.
âCustis,â Cindy said, âIâd appreciate it if youâd give me a few minutes alone with Monty before you go up and question him.â
âOf course,â Longarm agreed. âIâll dump my things in my room and be out here waiting in the lobby when you come down.â
When Cindy climbed up the stairs to the second floor, Longarm went to the registration desk, registered, and got his room key. A few moments later, with Marshal Beason still in tow, he put his things in his room, then went back outside and looked around at the hotel lobby. âThis will do fine, although Iâm not expecting to be here for much of my stay.â
Tom Beason asked, âHow long will you be here, Marshal?â
âI have no idea,â Longarm told the local lawman. âI guess that all depends on how long it will take to arrest or kill Cain Hawker.â
âThat could take quite a while. Maybe you should just let the bounty hunters do the job and go back to Denver. Iâll send you telegrams and keep you updated.â
âI appreciate your cooperation,â Longarm said, âbut Iâve never had a lot of faith in bounty hunters.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause most of them are amateurs,â Longarm said with his usual bluntness. âTheyâre farmers or cowboys or ex-soldiers who think that bringing a man in for his bounty will be quick and easy work. Oftentimes, it is. However, I have a feeling that Cain Hawker is going to be very, very difficult to bring to justice because of his association with renegade Apache.â
âIâd have to agree with you under ordinary circumstances,â Beason said. âBut Hawker has a two-hundred-dollar reward on his head, and thatâs one hell of a lot of money.
