Chapter 10

Margaret Deveny stared at herself in the cheval glass.

Beautiful?

To a painter? That was something – maybe more than something, more than being pretty and taking.

Her face was … not ordinary. That was true. But try as she might, she couldn’t see herself through Nicholas de Courtenay’s eyes.

His eyes … she felt again the thrill as he had kissed her hand. A new feeling; she didn’t remember ever feeling that particular frisson with John. Nick’s hand had been so warm; he’d forgotten he had taken his gloves off to paint, she suspected, since really he should never have touched her with his bare fingers.

A shiver went through her at the thought and her whole body seemed to grow warm.

This was a very bad idea. Nicholas de Courtenay thought of her as an artist’s model, nothing more.

For a moment, she imagined that – being an artist’s model in Italy, where men would kiss their hands to her in the street. A swift image of disrobing in front of Nicholas, in a room with flimsy, blowing curtains softening the southern light, to pose for something like ‘Spring’ or ‘Venus reclining’ … warmth bloomed in her belly and a blush swept through her whole body.

No more of that. The very idea was scandalous. Beneath her.

But how she wished she could run away to Italy and see the wonders of the ancient world herself!

Perhaps she could convince her father to visit Oxfordshire, where they had excavated that Roman villa. It made her laugh – she could just imagine the expression on her father’s face if she asked! No, all her travelling would have to be done through books.
