CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Becky slumped on the floor, while Matt moved quickly to the bathroom to fetch a warm, wet facecloth, and hastily returned to wipe her back.

“That was incredible,” she murmured as he helped her on to the couch and brought her into his arms. “Where have you been all my life?”

“Just livin’ in this cabin waitin’ for you to show up.”

“I’m glad you were patient.”

“I’m glad I was too. You wouldn’t believe how many females I had to chase off this property.”

She laughed out loud, then sat up and glanced around the room.

“We need to bring Shelby back inside. It’s strange being in here without her.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” he replied, and bringing his fingers to his lips, he let out a sharp whistle. In seconds Shelby was crawling in through the doggy door.

“You’re such a clever girl,” Becky exclaimed as the dog trotted across to them.

“Shelby, go and get your reward,” Matt ordered as he patted her head.

With a bark, Shelby ran across to the kitchen, pried open a cabinet door, pushed her nose into a box of milk bones and pulled one out.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Becky exclaimed, shaking her head. “If that had been Waggles, he would have eaten all the bones and the box as well.”

“Wouldn’t that make him the smarter one?” Matt asked with a grin.

“You mean Waggles is smart enough not to listen to humans.”

“Something like that,” Matt replied still grinning. “But she has her wow moments too, believe me.”

“Speaking of wow moments,” Becky began, lowering her voice, “we should go out tonight and celebrate?”

“Celebrate what?”

“Everything…saving those animals, discovering where the Griffins are, but mostly us!”

“Sounds like a plan. What did you have in mind?”

“Kelly was telling me about a restaurant that’s decorated like a barn inside, and she said the food is great.”

“Yep, I know it. I haven’t eaten there, but I’ve heard good things. Let’s do it.”

“Great. I’ll have to—shoot, that’s my phone,” she declared as the sound of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun rang from her bag sitting on the kitchen counter. Hurrying from the couch, she lifted it out and looked at the screen. “It’s Doug,” she said, accepting the call. “Hi, Doug. How are you?”

“Hey, I’m fine, the wife’s still upset though.”

“I’m sure she is.”

“What about you, Becky?”

“I’m fine too. In fact, I’ve been very busy. Are you calling to let me know we’re opening?”

“Not exactly. I’ve decided to take a couple of weeks off for a much needed vacation. We’re off to sunny Florida for some sun and sea. It’s been almost five years since we went away.”

“You should, you deserve it. Is there anything I can do to help you close up?”

“No, thanks hon. I’ll just clear out the refrigerator. We might extend the trip, but I’ll be in touch when I get back.”

“Have a wonderful time.”

“Thanks, Becky. Bye for now.”

“Bye, Doug.”

“He’s going away?” Matt asked as Becky ended the call.

“Yep, he’s taking his wife to Florida for two weeks. That awful morning has resulted in all kinds of good things,” she added with a wink.
