Chapter Fifteen

Mel

Geraud is in no hurry to return, which is excellent. It gives me plenty of time to catch my breath and figure out what I’m about to do next. Thankfully, the guards have ignored me. They either know I’m more trouble than I’m worth, or Geraud has instructed them not to touch me. Whichever it is, I’m grateful. The less distractions I have right now, the better.

When the bastard comes back, he is going to be mad, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Angry people make mistakes. I need him unbalanced and lashing out. All I need is a chance. One single chance. That’s all I’m asking for. If anyone’s listening, a small miracle would be great about now. They can accept my soul in payment. I sold it to the devil years ago, anyway.

The creak of the door opening alerts me to Geraud’s return, and I can feel my body tightening in response. Adrenaline is flowing through me and I am getting ready to fight. I have to take out one rather large, crafty old bastard and two of his lackeys. Then I get out of here. That’s all I have to do. Yeah. If only it were that easy.

As Geraud enters the room, I look up at him. He’s cleaned himself up. There’s no longer any sign of blood and I have to wonder if he’s been sitting with cotton wads up his nose for the past twenty minutes. The thought makes me want to laugh, but I sit on that reaction. I’m in enough trouble as it is.

“Out!” he yells at the guards. They quickly retreat with a soft thump of boots. They’re not stupid.

“Miss me?” Geraud is now cracking his knuckles, one by one, as he approaches me. My heart takes on a life of its own, clawing around like a frightened mole, and I find I’m grateful it’s caged behind sinew and bone. It will take more than that to scare me, though. This is just an appetizer as far as I’m concerned.

“Almost as much as a lobotomy. Next question.” Bile creeps up my throat. I wonder if I’ll regret the Mars Bars I ate earlier. Damn Adie and his lunch thieving habits.

“Yes, I definitely think I know why my son likes you.” Geraud approaches somewhat carefully, expecting me to run, but that won’t happen. Not this time.

“That’s not a question.” Nope. That’s a loaded fucking bomb. I don’t want to hear about Adie’s virtues, or lack thereof.

“You challenge him. He’s yet to meet a woman who challenges him.” Geraud is still approaching me, like a hyena approaching wounded prey, but with each footstep he gets slower and slower. Anyway, he’s wrong. Adie has met a woman who’s challenged him before. Unfortunately, she was already taken. I’m second best and have a shit-heap’s worth of baggage that I cart along behind me like a sinking ship.

“I tried to cut off his junk. I think he’s over his fascination,” I state bluntly. The last thing we need is dad putting two and two together.
