Woodstock and Altamont are seen as polar opposites in a mass-media-generated parable of light and darkness. Woodstock is peace, love, and the triumph of Woodstock Nation. Altamont is guns, drugs, and the end of the world. But they were just two ends of the same mucky stick. The same fuck-ups, the same cast of characters.

Woodstock and Altamont were the result of the same disease: the bloating of mass bohemia in the late sixties. The Haight worked because it was a small, closely knit community where everybody knew each other and shared a common vision. Then came the attempt to re-create the vibe on a larger and larger scale. At that point, Mercury, the patron of merchants and thieves, took over and they started setting up bleachers out on Highway 61.

A couple of days before Altamont, Emmett Grogan left a message scrawled on the blackboard at the Dead office: “CHARLIE MANSON MEMORIAL LOVE DEATH CULT FESTIVAL.” We should at least have read the writing on our own wall. . . .
