CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

“What the hell is that?” Leah asked, still shaking from Will’s jump scare. They were both back in Leah’s room, sitting on the bed thigh to thigh as they studied a large leather-bound book.

“No idea,” Will replied, tilting the book to take a better look. “Found it behind one of the chests.”

Leah was surprised she hadn’t found it herself when she had checked for any hideout spots, but clearly she had missed a few nooks and crannies. After the adrenaline had finally lifted, she took the book off Will and placed it on her lap.

“It looks old,” she said, stroking the spine.

“Should we open it?”

Leah shook her head and then nodded. “I don’t know.” She took a glance at the tablet on her bedside table and saw John fast asleep, the memory of his grip on her wrist making it hurt more. She worried he’d remember their conversation in the morning and how he would react to seeing her after that day, but right now her thoughts were aimed at the book.

The neighbour’s dog was barking outside again, and Leah wished he’d just shut up. Surprised with her sudden, aggressive thoughts, she put it down to exhaustion, and it wasn’t like she’d said it out loud anyway. She opened the book to the first page.

Warning

This book contains some very dark spells, and only experienced witches and wizards should use them. Dark magic is heavy on the body and mind, and anyone wishing to cast a spell, should always use good protection.

“Don’t think they’re talking about condoms,” Will joked again.

Leah hit him in the shoulder.

“Ouch. Sorry,” he laughed, massaging his joint and turning back to the book.

Always cleanse the area before and after each session. This book is focused on demons; it is important to not let them through into our world.

What the…

“It’s a fairytale book or something,” Will said upon finishing reading. Whether it was another joke or not, Leah stared at the page, rereading the words for the second time. She gave Mia’s spirit a possibility but this… This must have been a joke, surely. Maybe Mia was messing about with her mates, playing Ouija or whatever kids did these days, but then she remembered the cashier’s words. He wanted to bring his daughter back. Maybe he did bring her back. Maybe he used the book and was successful, but he only brought her spirit back, considering her body was either burnt or buried six feet under the ground.

“Lee, you okay?” Will’s hand came down over hers in a comforting manner, dragging her away from her creeping thoughts.

“What?” she asked, disoriented. “Yes. I mean, it’s… it’s spooky, isn’t it?”

“If you believe in that stuff. Do you wanna read what’s inside?”

“No,” she replied hastily with a raised voice.

Will stood up and picked up a blanket off the bed along with the extra pillow Leah had got out for him. The barking of the dog was doing his head in, and he was glad they had never got a dog when they were together.
