‘I need to get some money off you.’ Zara is scavenging a pile of raw carrots when I come in.

‘For?’

She cracks one with her teeth. Otis is waiting for her to throw him the stalky bit. ‘Stuff. Clothes. Tampons. Train fare.’

‘Train fare?’

‘If I want to go into Leeds. Shopping.’

‘We can go shopping for whatever you need any time you want.’

‘I want to go by myself!’

‘With Bethany, you mean?’

‘No!’ she says, unconvincingly. ‘With anybody!’ Then, when I ignore that, ‘I need my own money! I have a right to pocket money! I’m not being kept prisoner!’

I look her straight in the eye. ‘Actually, you don’t have a right to pocket money. And you’re not being kept prisoner, but I have to know you’re not sneaking off to go and see that girl.’

‘This won’t work,’ she shouts. ‘You can’t do this to me!’

It takes a gargantuan effort but I walk out of the room.
