Chapter Fourteen

Elliot

I didn’t know what I’d been expecting for Teegan’s room but it wasn’t what Nick showed me. Knowing how much money the man was sitting on, plus the fact this house was something out of a magazine, I guess I’d thought that the kids’ rooms would be a copy of the hallway and stairs, all immaculate and shining like a new pin, and kind of sterile.

This was a room of two halves, larger than my entire living room and kitchen combined, with wooden floors and rugs, and a bed fit for a princess, with bed clothes and drapes in pale lemon. A long mirror hung on the wall opposite the door, running from ceiling to floor, and on either side there were pegs at different heights with bags and teddy bears in nets. Each bag had Teegan’s name on it in bright yellow, and there was one crammed with all kinds of building blocks with letters. The bed was enormous, wide enough for six toddlers, but safe and surrounded with low bumpers, and in one corner there was a pile of cushions a child could arrange to make their space seem smaller. There was a tent in another corner, it looked like the kind of thing found at jousting tournaments but on a smaller scale.

“There’s a bathroom, a toilet, a sink, and a shower, but the main bathroom with the bath is a couple of rooms down.” He opened the only door from the room to reveal a tidy space with yet more letters—this time foam—sticking to the tile, along with fluffy lemon towels, and cartoon ducks on the wall. He closed the door again, then went to a crouch in front of the tent and pulled back a cover, twisting it on a cotton hook so it stayed back. “This is Teegan’s quiet place. Do you want to see?”

I followed him down into a crouch and peered inside at the mini sensory space.

“Hang on,” he said, and reached behind the tent to flick a switch. The gentle glow of fairy lights illuminated the inside, and there was a bubble wall with softly popping circles of color, bright rainbow-themed cushions, and a pile of books. “She loves books,” Nick said with a smile, then the crouch turned into him going to his knees and leaning into the tent.

I refused to have an inappropriate reaction to the way his pants stretched across his ass. I just wished my traitorous body listened to my normally clever brain. I’d been right to tell him my fears about why he was adopting Teegan, and even though I felt like shit telling him, I had to do it. I took his answer at face value, because somewhere along the line I’d seen Nick’s integrity and his love for his kids, and I believed his assertion about there being space in his heart.

“There’s all kinds of books in here, soft ones with texture, some letter books; it’s an escape I think for anyone to lose themselves in stories.
