Chapter Seven

“Wow...” Esmeralda sighed dreamily while she looked a bit dazed.

Bastian took Sawyer’s hand in his. “After that, I was hers...”

Sawyer chuckled. “Well, he had to face my dad...but yeah. We have been together ever since.”

Esmerelda looked over at Bane.

He looked back and raised a brow at her.

“So, how did...” She swallowed and tried again. “You meet Sarah?”

Bane looked over at Sarah. “She took care of me after I died and ceased to be.”

Esmeralda blinked her eyes at him. “What?”

Bane shook his head. “The Bane that sits here now. He is not the same man he was. Bastian offered me a new life. A do over, he called it.”

“I don’t understand,” Esmeralda replied.

“I didn’t either at first,” Sarah spoke up. “But he explained it to me.” She looked over at Orrin.

Bane leaned back and he too looked at Orrin. “Sarah is right. I think it’s time that you heard this."

Orrin stared back. “I can see you aren’t the same man in many ways. The differences we had—”

Bane sat forward. “—they were my doing. I’d lived my entire life watching people. I never understood the compassion people had for one another. I never felt the need to. I suppose that link was missing from my soul and I just never missed it. You had it, brother. That cold unfeeling Jessin trait seemed to miss in you. Then I did the first decent thing in my miserable life. I tried to stop a man hell bent on destroying Cricket. She was so like Grace, her mother. She was as straight as an arrow and she showed me real honor, she held her ground even when the ground beneath her was crumbling. I was faced with the fact that...I had done Grace so wrong. I thought that maybe I could at least make up for that with Cricket. I destroyed the man and his army. At the last minute, he got off a shot that would have ended my life but instead, I got a second chance.” He looked over at Bastian.

Bastian gave him a nod. “I figured if I could do it, maybe... He could too. I formed the VIM group and if we could have Bane—”

“—we could kick more ass,” James cut in.

Bastian grinned. “Yeah something like that, but his skills were a part of what he used to be, so it wasn’t easy for him.”

James squared his shoulders. “Well, it was for me. I have been with Bastian for quite a few years. I got information for him, flew him to where he needed to go. Provided back up. But...I have always been a good guy.”

The men all shook their heads.

Sydney patted his hand. “I know you are, James.”

“See? She knows me well.” He kissed her cheek.

“Well, why don’t you guys relax and tomorrow is another day,” Aly suggested. “We will clean up here.” She nodded at the other women and they all stood up. They gathered dishes and glasses then went into the kitchen.

Esmeralda got up and headed through the kitchen too.
