Chapter 13

“Can you read what’s on that paper, Sergeant Nunez?”

Yup, Nunez thought. But I’m not about to tell you what it says.

“No sir. My Spanish sucks.”

The soldiers stared at the screen in the back of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team’s Humvee, sharing the view from a remote-control robot. The screen was black and white and a little fuzzy, but the image was clear enough. A charred corpse, dressed in tattered remnants of black fatigues and an armored vest. The man’s face was a silent, eternal scream. Fire had caused his lips to curl back, exposing bright teeth protruding from split, blackened gums. The body lay on its back on a dingy white sheet. The man’s abdomen jutted upward because of the arms and hands pinned behind his back, and from decomposition gases distending his intestines.

None of that was interesting to Nunez. The interesting thing was the dirty, smudged sheet of paper safety-pinned to the body armor, just below the base of the man’s neck. The note read:
