Chapter Nine

Tryg hadn’t gone to sleep because he knew what Isaac was going to do before he did it. It wasn’t hard to read him, and Tryg knew him well enough by now. Isaac was frightened, as anyone would be in his situation, but not just for himself. He didn’t want anyone to get hurt, including Tryg, and since Tryg was the only shield he had against the asshole who was after him, Isaac knew Tryg was going to get hurt if they went on the way they were.

Which was why Isaac was leaving.

Tryg wasn’t surprised, but he was angry, both at Isaac for putting himself in danger the way he was and at the person after him for, well, being after him. He’d contacted Thor as soon as they’d settled in the motel room, and he was working on it, but it might take a little while. Isaac needed to be protected until Tryg could get to the asshole who was scaring him to kick his ass—or tear his head off, Tryg wouldn’t be particular about it, not when it came to Isaac’s safety.

Tryg stayed still and listened to Isaac getting up from the other bed and moving around the bedroom. He’d noticed Isaac was still wearing all his clothes, including his socks, even though he hated sleeping with them on. It wasn’t hard to imagine what he was doing from the sounds Tryg could hear—slipping his shoes on, taking his bag, moving to the door. The door opened, then after a moment of hesitation, closed again.

Tryg got up. He was still dressed, too, and he didn’t give Isaac the opportunity to get far. He swung the door open and saw Isaac was only a few feet from it. Isaac jumped and turned around, his cheeks flushed and a guilty expression on his face. Tryg crossed his arms over his chest and arched a brow. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“I... to get food?”

Tryg rolled his eyes. “Nice try. Get in here. Isaac. We need to talk.” They should have talked earlier like Tryg had planned, but Isaac had been asleep—or faking sleep—when Tryg had hung up with Thor.

Isaac shuffled. “I think I should go.”

“To get food?”

“No. I, well, you know that’s not where I was going.”

“Of course I do. Get back in the room.”

Since Isaac didn’t seem to want to, Tryg strode over to him and grabbed his wrist. He made sure to move slowly so that Isaac knew he could get away if he wanted to, and he kept his hold loose, but he still dragged Isaac back to the room and locked the door behind them. He leaned against it and looked at Isaac, wondering how he should bring this up. He understood why Isaac had left, but he couldn’t allow him to do it again, or to think Tryg was weak. Isaac needed to be protected. He’d get hurt if those people, whoever they were, got their hands on him.

“You shouldn’t have left, Isaac,” Tryg said even though that was obvious to both of them.
