Chapter 8
The best thing about being an attorney was helping people. But when Sarah failed, she once again became that green first-year law student who didnât have a clue about how things really worked.
And right here, in this moment, she was desperate to avoid that feeling.
Sarah uncrossed and recrossed her legs for the thousandth time as she listened to a local parish citizen drone on about her dislike of chickens.
Really? Chickens?
âBottom line, Iâm waking up far too early because of the noise. Iâd like to propose a zoning change.â The forty-something placed a hand on her ample hip and harrumphed into the microphone set up in the middle of the floor. Seven council members sat up front, the chairman in the middle, and the rest of the small room was filled with townspeople from Port Willis and a few surrounding villages.
Across the aisle, Sarah spied Rebecca Trengrouse lounging in her seat, arms crossed over her chest. No one sat with her.
Trying to keep herself from rolling her eyes at Chicken Lady, Sarah gripped the folder in her lap and smoothed the top sheet of paper that contained her outline. To her right, Ginny sat with Steven, her bobbing knee the only sign she was nervous about todayâs outcome. On Sarahâs left sat Michael, whoâd insisted on coming as moral support.
Sheâd received no massive revelations during their day out together yesterday, but one thing was for certainâif she spent much more time in his presence like that, she was going to kiss the man, plain and simple.
And though that idea was altogether much too pleasant, she knew it could lead nowhere. Nowhere real, anyway. What was she going to do? Run off to England like Ginny had?
And what about Warren? Heâd texted her several times during the last few days to let her know how excited he was to spend Christmas Eve together. Not that theyâd ever said they were exclusive. But still.
A sigh escaped Sarahâs lips, and Michaelâs hand slipped over one of her own, giving it a quick squeeze before releasing her. She looked at him and mouthed thank you. Leaning toward her, he whispered, âYouâve got this, Sarah. I believe in you.â His breath warmed her ear and neck, sending shivers up her spine.
The council voted to retain the current zoning, much to Chicken Ladyâs loud dismay, and moved on to the next agenda item. âNext, we have Ms. Ginny Rose with a motion to discuss and dismiss Ordinance Five Two Six Eight.â
Ginny and Sarah stood and walked to the microphone, which Ginny snagged and adjusted to fit her height. âHello, esteemed council.â
If this hadnât been such a serious matter, Sarah would have snickered at her sisterâs formality. Ginny had never been one to enjoy speaking in public, and Mother had constantly been on her about her use of âslang.â Really, it was just further proof that Ginny had always been different than the rest of the Bentleys.
But while their parents saw that as a bad thing, Sarah wished she had what Ginny possessedâa surety inside herself.
