CHAPTER 11

Brendan had called Poppy four times, only to get her voicemail. Frustrated, he dropped his phone on the couch beside him and stared at the television. He had no idea what was on, it was just background noise, actors on a screen dealing with some imaginary situation. This case reminded him of a movie, one with no clues. He only hoped it played out the same, with the answers coming in one big reveal at the end. What he didn’t look forward to was the complete disaster that seemed like everything was hopeless prior to solving the mystery. That usually meant death and destruction.

He laughed at his own thoughts and shook his head. His imagination sometimes got the best of him, but then, what was he supposed to think about deaths that involved disappearing black clouds? All this seemed like supernatural horse shit, and he couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

With a growl, he got to his feet. He couldn’t just sit around in his pajama pants all day. He had work to do, and he needed to check on Poppy. It worried him that she didn’t answer, and he had a bad feeling about it. He had to make sure she was okay. Her interest in his work, coupled with the fact that her father was obviously a victim of some sort, made her a special case.

His protective instincts in overdrive, he hurriedly showered and dressed, tossing all the files in a briefcase and taking it with him. If she wanted to dig deep, he’d let her. And maybe, in the process, he’d draw something out of her she had no intention of sharing, maybe even something she had no idea she knew that would help give them a lead.

As he started the car, Brendan rolled his eyes. The fact that he referred to ‘them’ was insane. It wasn’t as if they were together and Poppy certainly wasn’t his partner. She had no formal training in investigation, hadn’t gone through a police academy. She was an innocent. And she was so young. He had no business messing with her at all, whether for business or pleasure. And yet, she seemed so much more mature than most of the women he knew, as if the hell she’d survived had given her perspective some people never had.

The drive seemed awfully short, and when he arrived, he cursed to himself, realizing he had no idea where on the campus to find Poppy. He didn’t know which dorm she was in, and he wasn’t about to just go wandering the campus, looking for her. And since she was new, he doubted anyone he might run into would know where she lived, either, should he ask. He’d just look creepy unless he showed his badge, which would make her look bad to everyone else. Why on earth would a cop come looking for her?

So, he tried her phone one more time and grew incredibly antsy and flustered when she again didn’t get an answer.
