I sat on the bedroom floor of the cottage, folding my clothes, and tucking them neatly away into the dresser drawers that I had left empty until now. There was a sense of permanence and meaning in this act. It was as if in placing my belongings into the drawers for the first time, I was finally accepting this life that had pulled me so far away from the one I had before. I no longer felt haphazardly strewn about, adrift in the vast unknown; I was consciously folding myself into compartments that whispered of possibility.

Movement from the corner of my eye drew my attention to the window. Large flakes of snow struck the glass, slowly slipping down and disappearing into the darkness. I stood and grabbed a jacket from the bed, my heart swelling with childlike anticipation as I stepped outside.

The chill of the night air was a shock to my system as swirling snowflakes like thick cotton spilled from the sky, covering the world in a beautiful, white silence. My breath billowed out in the glow of the porch light as a giddiness rose inside. A new beginning, like a bright flash of promise, bloomed within as I stared up at the dizzying flakes falling soundlessly, bathing me in a peaceful stillness that swept everything else away.

I don’t know how long I stood there watching the snow fall but eventually the cold stirred me from my thoughts, pulling me back to the warmth waiting inside. Shaking the snow off my coat, I stepped into the cottage, my hair wet, and my fingers numb as I grabbed a glass and a bottle of wine from the kitchen and retreated into the bathroom.

Turning on the faucet, I poured myself a glass of wine, watching the water eddy against the porcelain as I shed my clothes and sunk into the bath, the steam swirling around me like fog, obscuring the patterned wallpaper. I closed my eyes as the heat coiled itself through me, slipping through the tension and suspending my body in a blissful buoyancy.

The wind picked up outside, rhythmically pelting the glass with snow. Its mournful whine slithered through the cracks of the windows, and I found the sound oddly comforting as I closed my eyes and slipped deeper into the water, reveling in this feeling of contentment. Color flickered beneath my eyelids, and I opened them to see the lights above me grew dim, filling the bathroom with a dusty amber glow before enclosing me in a sudden, jarring darkness.
