Thad

That night Kip and Thad ate dinner at home. Kip’s deal got them meal credits to all the restaurants in the resort, but they both were too far into their bodybuilding habit to ruin it all on restaurant food. Most guys they knew ate like garbage disposals, so it was nice (and rare) to have this interest in common. Plus it was great to have their own kitchen. This was a perk most of the resort employees did not have. Kip knew how to cook everything because he learned when he was a kid, and he was teaching Thad.

Halfway through dinner, Thad got a text from Cassie. He hadn’t said anything about the party because he wasn’t sure if it was a legitimate invitation, and also a part of him wanted Kip to himself that night. He couldn’t ignore it with Kip’s questioning face, so he pulled up the screen. “Cassie, the girl who took the next shift at the pool is inviting us to a party.”

Kip raised an eyebrow. “How did she get your number?”

Thad felt self-conscious. “She told me there might be a party and insisted on texting herself from my phone. We don’t have to go if you don’t want.”

Kip chewed his dinner and considered. “It would be good to meet new people, especially if you get your first followers from them.”

Thad laughed. “You’re always thinking about business aren’t you?”

“Absolutely. That is how you make success. You have no work hours and all work hours. It’s not just your job. It’s what you are.”

“We were going to work on our sites tonight. Will going to this party mess with our plans?” Thad hoped Kip would agree. He wasn’t anti-social. He just wanted to stay in with Kip.

“Maybe, but we have made good progress and can miss a night. It’s not good to be invited to a party and not show up, especially at the beginning of the summer.”

Thad knew Kip was right. They had all summer. He could share Kip with the party tonight. He just wasn’t sure he could stomach watching Kip talk to girls. He endured enough of that in high school. Maybe there would be alcohol.

The party was set up on the lawn in the common area near all the employee dorms. Tons of kids were here. Some that he recognized, most he did not. He felt great walking into a party with handsome and charismatic Kip. He could pretend like he was his, at least in his mind.

Cassie appeared out of nowhere with a drink in her hand. “Hey Thad, glad you could make it!” She snorted. “Get it? Thad Glad?” She put her hand on Thad’s chest. Laughing. He could smell the booze on her breath.

That’s when she noticed Kip. “Ohhhh, this is your roommate?” She looked Kip up and down with an appreciative eye.

Thad grimaced inside but kept his face light and polite. “Cassie, this is my roommate and best friend Kip.”

“Hey Cassie.” Kip shook her hand and gave her one of of his winning smiles.
