The redoubtable Hepburn, Bogart’s costar, relaxes during a break. Though Bogart hated the African heat, mildew, bugs, and bad water, he later said that Hepburn found everything “divine.”

In the film, the stars essentially played versions of themselves, with Hepburn the patrician lady to Bogart’s charming rogue. Of himself and his director, Bogie said, “All we ate was baked beans, canned asparagus and drank Scotch whiskey. Whenever a fly bit me or Huston, it dropped dead.”
