While getting ready for dinner the next night, Leah reflected on the past five years, particularly the times that she had spent with Alex. After she had broken things off with Carla, Leah had been single for a while. She busied herself with graduate school and then work, having landed a tenure track job at a good university before she graduated. It was a long way from home, but that was how she liked it; she refused to be closeted by the rampant homophobia in her small, southern hometown. Alex had run off and joined the Air Force, leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake. Theyâd kept in touch, and somehow managed to see each other quite often, regardless of where they were living. It was a lot of fun at first, planning rendezvous in different cities and sneaking around their hometown so no one would see them. They werenât afraid of being found out; more often than not, Alex hadnât told her family she was in town and didnât want them to see her. Theyâd shared a lot of good memories, mostly great sex and laughing at past indiscretions.
At one point, they even tossed around the idea of settling down into a ârealâ relationship. Leah nixed that idea when she found out that Alex had a girlfriend in Hawaii, where she had been stationed at the time. She was surprised that Alex had lied to her about the other woman; up until that point, theyâd always shared information about whom they were dating or sleeping with at the time. Hell, sheâd even met some of Alexâs âfriends.â In retrospect, Leah realized that it was ridiculous, Alex was a liar, and even though Leah had made a point to be honest with her over the years, it seemed that Alex would never be able to do the same thing. It was a long time before they saw each other again after that. Hawaii had been a turning point in their relationship; Leah realized that things needed to change, although they continued to see each other intermittently for the next year or so.
Leah shook her head to clear it of the memories and return her mind to the present. It was time to get this break-up party started. She checked her lipstick and make-up in mirror, waved good-bye to her parents and walked out of the door. She drove the fifteen minutes through town to get to La Croix, her hometownâs nicest restaurant, but decided to wait in the car since she was a little early. Leah hated to be late for anything, and she hated to be kept waiting. On more than one occasion sheâd left a date when the woman hadnât shown up on time. She had a fifteen minute rule: If you didnât show up or call within fifteen minutes of the scheduled meeting time, she was out of there, no questions asked, and no second dates either.
After about five minutes, she heard the telltale booming of Alexâs SUV.
