CHAPTER 19

The screech of a hawk gliding effortlessly overhead was the first sound of the morning and the one that startled Pat Andrews out of his slumber. He lifted himself from his bedding with some effort, sluggish and tired from a restless sleep. He and the others had been pushing themselves over the past day, trying to make it to Jackson Gap before Jarrod Ford left from there for parts unknown.

Andrews went about the camp, nudging the others with the toe of his boot, each resulting in the ruffled appearance of a haggard face as they reluctantly succumbed to the reality that it was time to rise. Each man went about cleaning up his bedding as Andrews started working on reviving the fire that had almost disappeared during the night.

Pat Andrews and his gang were all concerned about their predicament, though Andrews was noticeably more worried than he was letting on to the others. He was not talking about the severity of their plight to them, something that in itself was not normal, but it didn’t matter. They had ridden with him long enough to know when he was stressed about a situation and this time, the uncertainty of the situation had worn him down more than any before ever had.

Andrews’ concerns were legitimate. He was worried they were not going to be able to overtake Ford before it was too late. He tried to push the severity of it out of his mind, but it was no use. Worrying about it dug into his gut. Over and over, he had promised himself that he would make Ford pay for what he was putting him through, but it was beginning to look more and more like he wasn’t sure if he would be able to fulfill that promise.

“Everybody up,” Andrews barked as the sight of Alfred Small not stirring out of the corner of his eye sparked agitation in his already impatient demeanor. “I want to be on the move in ten minutes.” He glanced around the camp and saw everyone moving about except for Alfred Small. “That includes you, too, Small.” The sight of his figure to comply displeased Andrews, but he didn’t have time to address the issue any further just yet and went back to working on securing his saddle.

“What about breakfast?” Small whined as he slowly sat up and scratched his head of tussled hair without making a move to stand.

Andrews abandoned buckling his saddle to walk over towards Small, who was facing away from him and did not see his approach until Andrews kicked him in his back, forcing a painful grunt from Small. He whipped around to see Andrews standing over him with a less-than-understanding glare. He needn’t speak before Small had jumped up and feverishly began tearing down his bedding as Andrews gave him one last scornful glance before returning to saddling his horse.

All the men were ready and sitting in their saddles when Pat Andrews swung his leg over and wheeled his horse towards town without comment.
