“Maybe I should try some different shoes?” Zack said. Even his upgraded, limited edition sneakers looked out of place with this classy ensemble.

Giacomo nodded solemnly. “But of course.”

He offered some shiny black dress shoes, which Zack quickly put on. They weren’t as comfortable as his sneakers, but they weren’t horrible.

“Oh, Giacomo, you’ve outdone yourself!”

Kayla swept into the store, and Zack forgot all about his new look. She had changed as well and was wearing a short blue dress that coordinated with his new shirt. Had she been texting Giacomo as well, or was the color coordination a coincidence? She kissed the tailor’s cheeks, then turned to study Zack.

“I’ll have the rest of his clothes delivered to his apartment,” Giacomo said.

“Marvelous. You’re the best.”

“The rest of my clothes?” Zack said, feeling a little behind. “You mean the tux?”

“And a few other surprises,” Kayla said with a grin. “Come on, we don’t want to be late for our reservation.”

She took Zack’s arm and pulled him out of the store. He followed her, paying the charges Giacomo sent to his OptiGlasses with only a small wince. Zack would have to put a cap on clothing purchases at some point, if for no other reason than to conserve space in his apartment.

Kayla led Zack into a waiting limo and poured him a glass of champagne. He took it, feeling as though he had skipped a few tutorial levels and found himself on a quest he didn’t quite understand.

“Cheers,” Kayla said, clinking her glass with his. “I’m having a really great time.”

“Yeah, me too.”

The lie slipped out easily. Shopping wasn’t exactly Zack’s idea of a good time, but that was universal, wasn’t it? Girlfriends went shopping, and boyfriends humored them. Everything was a little expensive—hers more than his by far. But his hasty research seemed to indicate that this was normal. Women were just more expensive than men. He remembered hearing his college girlfriends complain about how expensive hair appointments and manicures were. And if he had to spend an afternoon shopping, at least it was with someone hot.

“Smile.” Kayla held out her phone and leaned toward Zack to take a selfie.

He leaned in, smiling at the camera this time. Kayla tapped at her phone, then turned back to drinking her champagne.

A few moments later, DaEvo chimed.
